Madison Cawthorn launches bid to run for Congress despite his chequered history of scandals

When he exploded onto the political scene, some viewed Madison Cawthorn as the future of the Republican Party.

A chiselled jaw; absurdly young; and with a compelling life story, having lost the use of his legs in a car crash, Mr Cawthorn was at the crest of a wave of red-blooded Republicans whose politics had been moulded by Trumpism.

But less than two years later, his whirlwind career in politics was over as quickly as it had begun, complete with a lifetime worth of scandals ranging from allegations of sexual misconduct and being caught with a loaded gun at an airport.

Former Rep. Madison Cawthorn, among the youngest people ever elected to the U.S. House, announced Tuesday that he is running again, this time in Florida.

The 30-year-old Cawthorn, a Republican who represented Asheville and the surrounding region in western North Carolina from 2021 to 2023, is now running to represent the reliably red Fort Meyers area in southwest Florida. That seat is being vacated by Rep. Byron Donalds, who is seeking the GOP nomination in Florida’s 2026 gubernatorial race.

Cawthorn also received widespread attention after saying that people he had “looked up to” in Washington used cocaine and invited him to orgies.
