PREVIEW: Panthers to get good look at youngsters vs. Lightning in Orlando

ORLANDO – The Florida Panthers will peer into the future when they continue their preseason with a neutral-site matchup against the rival Tampa Bay Lightning at Kia Center on Tuesday.

Deploying a lineup of mostly prospects, Panthers head coach Paul Maurice is looking to see how much the organization’s young players have learned during training camp.

“This will still be very scrambly, very sloppy, as all exhibition hockey is, but how can they apply our rules to the game they see in front of them?” Maurice said when asked about evaluating the team’s youngsters during the preseason.

With the majority of the team’s veterans not taking the ice until the final two games of the preseason, the prospects got the job done in a 4-3 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday.

Preseason Gameday 5: Florida Panthers at Tampa Bay Lightning

The Florida Panthers will play the first of three against the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight in a neutral site game from Orlando. Last night, Jack Studnicka scored the game-opening goal 56 seconds after initial puck drop and the game-winning power-play goal 28 seconds into overtime to lift the Panthers to a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes at Amerant Bank Arena. Sandis Vilmanis and Brett Chorske scored the other Florida goals. Mackie Samoskevich collected assists on both of Studnicka’s markers. Jesper Boqvist, Nolan Foote, Ben Harpur and Jeff Petry picked up an assist apiece. Sergei Bobrovsky played half the game and stopped all 11 shots faced before giving way to prospect Cooper Black, who had a bit of rough go of it, finishing with five saves on eight shots. The Lightning enter tonight’s tilt with a 4-0 record in the preseason. They have beaten the Hurricanes and Nashville Predators twice.

Lightning Morning News: Game Day in Orlando

After a couple of days of practice, and a healthy roster adjustment, the Tampa Bay Lightning are back on the ice tonight for their annual pre-season game in Orlando. Their opponent will be the other Florida-based team. The reigning, defending, undisputed Stanley Cup Champion – the Florida Panthers. Get ready for a healthy dose of in-state hockey as the two teams will go head-to-head three times over the next week to finish off the pre-season.

Expect to see a lot of ice time for the players fighting for spots on the team – Dylan Duke, Jack Finley, Declan Carlie, etc., etc. One player that won’t be on the ice, at least in Orlando, is Andrei Vasilevskiy. The Big Cat skated on his own on Monday and is expected to participate in practice on Tuesday, however, he will not join the team on the trip along I-4 to Orlando.
