Tua claps back at criticism from Cam, pundits

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — As Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa put it Thursday, talking about playing quarterback is a lot easier than actually playing the position.
When asked about whether he's criticized more for his contract than his play, Tagovailoa suggested his job is more difficult than pundits make it seem.
Tagovailoa was specifically asked about Cam Newton's comments on ESPN's "First Take" last week, following the Dolphins' 31-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills, in which the former NFL MVP criticized Tagovailoa's performance considering the four-year, $212.1 million extension Tagovailoa signed last summer.
Tua Tagovailoa on Cam Newton’s criticism: ‘I want to see anybody on the streets come play QB’ – The Athletic
While the Miami Dolphins are stuck in the basement of the NFL standings through three weeks of the 2025 season, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa remains hovering near the top of the NFL’s highest-paid players list.
Tagovailoa’s $51.3 million annual salary has factored into how some people evaluate his play. That includes former NFL MVP Cam Newton, who spoke on ESPN’s “First Take” about Tagovailoa’s production-to-contract ratio.
“This is the frustrating reality we are faced with, not just as fans but as people who observe this game,” Newton said. “Tua Tagovailoa is making more than Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford and Jayden Daniels. Am I pocket watching? No, no, no. I’m putting things in perspective here. … Bro, what you’re being paid, what you’re asked to do, what you have the capability of, from one quarterback to the other — I look at his situation like, bro, come on, dawg. Especially when you’ve got a Ferrari and a Lamborghini and other amenities that some quarterbacks wish they had.”

Cam Newton, Stephen A. Smith respond to Tua Tagovailoa's 'anybody can [criticize]' comment
Tua Tagovailoa clapped back at critics of the Miami Dolphins quarterback's recent play, including Cam Newton, during a press conference Thursday where he said "anybody can [criticize], I don't think anybody can play quarterback." A day later, Newton and the team at ESPN's First Take had a pointed response.
"Part of me wants to say 'anybody can go 0-3,'" Newton said. "Do I feel a certain type of way? Absolutely not. I said what I said and I'll stand on what I said. This Tua Tagovailoa that we have seen within the last 12 months is not something and someone that is indicative of what we've seen before.
