Paul Finebaum considering departure from ESPN to run for U.S. Senate seat in Alabama

Paul Finebaum says he’s considering leaving ESPN and running for a U.S. Senate seat in Alabama.

“I ended up talking to someone … who made it clear that there was a desire for me to be involved,” Finebaum told OutKick. “And this person … was compelling and compassionate in the approach to me, and I started thinking about this.”

Finebaum, who recently relocated from Charlotte, N.C., back to his longtime home in Birmingham, Ala., said he would be running as a Republican and would likely fill the seat vacated by former Auburn and Ole Miss coach Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor in Alabama. The radio personality, always tight-lipped about his political leanings, told the outlet he voted for President Donald Trump in the 2024 election and that ESPN tells employees not to discuss politics.

Paul Finebaum shockingly considering leaving ESPN to run for Senate after Charlie Kirk assassination

ESPN SEC Network host and analyst Paul Finebaum said he is “considering” leaving the Worldwide Leader to run for the U.S. Senate on the republican ticket following the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

In a recent interview with OutKick’s Clay Travis, the 70-year-old Finebaum explained that “one or two people in Washington had reached out” to gauge his interest in politics — and that Kirk’s murder fueled a desire for him to be involved.

“It’s hard to describe, not being involved in politics, how that affected me and affected tens of millions of people all over this country. And it was an awakening,” Finebaum said of Kirk, who was killed on Sept. 10 during a Utah Valley University event at the age of 31.

ESPN Analyst Paul Finebaum Tells OutKick He’s Considering Running for Alabama Senate Seat

ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum revealed to OutKick that he’s seriously considering running for an Alabama Senate seat.

The revelation came during a one-on-one interview with OutKick founder Clay Travis. During their talk, Finebaum said that “one or two people” from Washington, D.C. contacted him to gauge his interest on a potential switch to politics. Although he admitted he never considered a career in politics, Finebaum said the killing of political commentator Charlie Kirk inspired him to think about it.

TRAVIS: Tommy Tuberville is running for governor — a former Auburn coach who beat Alabama six times in a row — and I think it’s fair to say he’s gonna win pretty comfortably. Seems to be the assessment. There’s an open Senate seat. Bruce Pearl, also at Auburn, had talked about it. He says now he’s not gonna run. Is that what the conversation — are you somewhat interested and intrigued at the opportunity of looking into that Senate race? I’m assuming that’s what they reached out to you to talk to you about.
