Ryder Cup 2025 opening pairings: Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood reunited at Bethpage
McIlroy and Fleetwood have been practising together this week at Bethpage
European captain Luke Donald has opted for two heavyweight pairings – including reuniting Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood – as he looks for a fast start in Friday's opening session of the Ryder Cup against the United States in New York.
Northern Ireland's McIlroy and England's Fleetwood linked up to great effect in Europe's victory in Rome two years ago, winning together in both foursomes sessions to contribute two crucial points.
Spain's Jon Rahm and England's Tyrrell Hatton, who also won both their matches together last time out, have been selected to start the visitors' bid for a first win on American soil since 2012.
Bryson, Rory eye Bethpage matchup amid rivalry
Bryson DeChambeau says he'd love to directly go up against Rory McIlroy this week at the Ryder Cup. (0:42)
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — If there is a brewing rivalry between Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy, then the Ryder Cup could be a perfect setting for another dramatic duel.
While both star golfers downplayed any animosity between them, DeChambeau and McIlroy also acknowledged that being matched up against each other this week at Bethpage Black would be welcomed.
"Would I love to go up against him? Yeah. It would be a lot of fun," DeChambeau said Thursday. "Is it going to happen? It's not likely. I mean, maybe once. You never know."

Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and the golf rivalry this Ryder Cup demands
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — There are moments that you wish, in hindsight, someone had thought to take a picture. Here’s one: It was nine years ago, a random Saturday afternoon in Abu Dhabi.
Bryson DeChambeau was 22. The reigning NCAA and U.S. Amateur champion was biding his time to turn pro and was racking up invitations to various pro tournaments. One was that week’s HSBC Championship, a European Tour event. DeChambeau got off to a helluva start, shooting an opening 64 (what he later told reporters was his “B game”) to take the early tournament lead. By Saturday, he was slotted in the final group for the tournament’s third round.
