Game 151: Red Sox vs. Athletics lineups and notes
After a day off, the Red Sox will be back in action when they face the Athletics Tuesday to open a three-game series at Fenway Park.
Thanks to the Yankees getting shut out by the Twins Monday night, the Sox are just one game back for the top wild-card spot and ½ game ahead of the Astros. With 12 games remaining, they are 3½ up on the surging Guardians, who have won nine of their last 10 to move within striking distance of the final spot.
The Sox will go with Connelly Early for the opener. The lefthander tossed five shutout innings in a 6-0 win at the Athletics last week and will be making his second career start.
Game 151: A’s at Red Sox, Springs vs. Early
Connelly Early will take the mound for the Sox tonight in his second career start, and in many aspects, it will look a heck of a lot like his first outing. He’s facing the A’s, again. He’s pitching on a Tuesday, again — And his counterpart will be former Sox southpaw Jeffrey Springs, again. (There’s definitely some sort of joke to be made here with the pitchers being “Early” and “Springs” and the matchup being Groundhog Day from last week.)
However, one key difference for Early will be the game’s setting. Instead of toeing the rubber in a minor league ballpark out on the west coast late at night, this time he’ll be on the mound at Fenway with a boisterous crowd backing him on every pitch. In some aspects, this will be his first real taste of major league action.

Series Preview: Athletics at Boston Red Sox. Connelly Early starts again
This weekend against the Yankees was disappointing, but the Red Sox did what they absolutely had to do: avoid getting swept. There is still time, opportunity, and maneuverability over the next few series if they play well. They kept the Texas Rangers at bay. They held off the Astros and the Mariners (of Etsy Witch Fame).
While Boston and Oakland didn’t face each other all season, they’re doing their coast-to-coast matchups a week apart. So everyone is (mostly) familiar with everyone else.
When we last saw Jeffrey Springs — in his previous start — the lefty gave up 5 runs in 5.0 innings. The Red Sox would score 4 in the first, 1 in the second, and 1 more in the eighth. The Athletics would actually out hit Boston 10 to 9 yet score zero runs. That’s not to say that Springs was robbed, though, as both his ERA and FIP approach 5.00. He’ll be facing off against Connelly Early again. Boston’s rookie lefty was superb last time out. In his major league debut he struck out 11 in 5.0 innings while allowing just 5 hits and a walk. Can he do that again? Probably not. But he doesn’t need to be exactly that guy every time out. With the Lefty Mashing Squad of Romy and Ref they’ll put a few runs on the board. Plus, with the small sample size, Connelly Early has a negative FIP right now. Who needs an Etsy witch when you can do that?
