Falcons make flurry of moves before Week 2 'Sunday Night Football' game

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons made a series of transactions Saturday before hitting the road for their Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Falcons placed safety Jordan Fuller on injured reserve, signed wide receiver David Sills V to the 53-man roster and elevated kicker Parker Romo from the practice squad to the active roster.

Fuller did not participate in practice all week due to a knee injury. He was officially ruled out of Week 2's game Friday when the team's game report was released. He played just one defensive and 16 special teams snaps in last Sunday's season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

How have Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy evolved since being NFL Draft prospects? – The Athletic

Many young quarterbacks get a buffer zone. A year zero, a mulligan — call it what you want, but most QBs drafted inside the top 10 head to teams that either are trying simply not to be terrible anymore or are at the start of being terrible for a while.

Michael Penix Jr. and J.J. McCarthy are, apparently, not most quarterbacks.

After getting just three starts as a rookie, Penix entered his second season as the Falcons’ unquestioned starter. Atlanta has divisional title hopes and, just as importantly, organizational changes could loom if 2025 doesn’t go the way the Falcons want.

NFL Expert Picks: Vikings Picked by Most in Home Opener Against Falcons

J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix, Jr., preparing for another prime-time meeting.

Their first encounter occurred more than 600 days ago, when McCarthy's Michigan Wolverines defeated Penix's Washington Huskies 34-13 in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game (Jan. 8, 2024). The next one was just over 100 days later at the NFL Draft stage in Detroit, with Atlanta selecting Penix eighth overall and Minnesota taking McCarthy two picks later.

The third meetup between the second-year NFL quarterbacks will occur under the bright lights of U.S. Bank Stadium, as the Vikings (1-0) host the Falcons (0-1) on Sunday Night Football. The prime-time matchup on NBC (7:20 p.m. CT) will be the first-ever meeting on SNF between the two teams.
