Lufthansa CEO Urges German States to Push for Lower Flight Costs
FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) – Lufthansa is hoping for political backing from Germany's federal states in its call for a reduction in government taxes and fees on air travel. The aviation sector urgently needs relief from the air traffic tax, as well as fees for passenger screening and air traffic control, says Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr. Although the new federal government addressed these issues in its coalition agreement, nothing has been implemented so far, he noted.
Following the pandemic, the industry now faces the "bizarre situation" in which, outside the major hubs of Munich and Frankfurt, three-quarters of former domestic connections are no longer offered due to cost pressures. "This concerns Germany as an aviation location, which is increasingly falling behind," Spohr warned. Economically strong regions are now much less connected than before the pandemic. He expressed hope that a growing number of state premiers would recognize: "What is happening here is a major disadvantage for our location."
