deGrom set to make return to Queens, face Mets tonight

ARLINGTON — For the first time since he signed with the Rangers as a free agent after the 2022 season, Jacob deGrom is set to face the team he left behind.

Texas has listed the 37-year-old deGrom as the probable starter for Friday night’s game against the Mets at Citi Field, which will kick off a three-game Interleague series between a pair of clubs in the thick of the Wild Card race in their respective leagues. The Mets are expected to counter with 22-year-old rookie Jonah Tong, their No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline, who will be making his third career start.

In New York for kind of a big series

Texas goes to New York to play a struggling Mets team

The Texas Rangers are currently in New York where, over the next three days, they will play 20% of their remaining schedule, squaring off against the Metropolitans.

This series is kind of a big deal. They are, really, all kind of a big deal at this point, given the situation the Rangers find themselves in or, more accurately, have put themselves in. An inability to perform at a level better than mediocre for much of the season means that, despite a pretty good second half — they have a .580 winning percentage since the All Star Break, which is a 94 win pace over 162 games — they are still on the outside looking in on as far as the playoff race goes, and in a position where one bad series could cripple their playoff hopes.

PHILADELPHIA — For the first time since Oct. 8, 2022 — the lone Mets wild-card victory over the Padres that postseason — it’s deGrom Day.

Nearly three years later, Jacob deGrom will step on the same Citi Field rubber that he climbed atop and reached heights that few, if any, pitchers have ever reached.

“That’s his mound,” longtime teammate Pete Alonso said before the Mets’ 6-4 loss to the Phillies on Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park. “Even though he’s somewhere else or with another team, that’s Jake’s mound.”
