SEATTLE — Flags will be lowered to half-staff across Washington state on Thursday for Patriot Day, honoring the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. 

Gov. Bob Ferguson directed Washington state and U.S. flags be lowered at all state agencies on Thursday, Sept. 11 until close of business or sunset. 

Patriot Day memorializes the lives lost when al-Qaeda hijackers crashed two planes into the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in New York City in 2001. A third hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon in Virginia. 

Just last month, the remains of three 9/11 victims were identified through evolving DNA technology as part of the ongoing effort to return the dead to their loved ones.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Flags will be lowered to half-staff Thursday to recognize Patriot Day following an order from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Patriot Day honors those who lost their lives, including first responders, in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

“On Patriot Day, we remember those we lost in the terrorist attacks on 9/11, honor those who serve, and recommit ourselves to standing up for what's right,” said Whitmer. “I encourage all Michiganders to come together in a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. local time and participate in local community service or charitable giving. This day reminds us to come together and honor our core values of freedom and opportunity. When we stand united, we are capable of greatness.”
