Orioles-Pirates series preview: Two last place teams battle, and a star awaits

The Pittsburgh Pirates are coming to town, and get ready to see Paul Skenes.

After two thrilling comebacks against Los Angeles and an off day on Monday, the Orioles kick off a three-game series at home against the Pirates.

For all the talk in recent years about how these two rebuilding teams were outplaying expectations, 2025 has not seen them outplay anything. The Pirates are currently last in their division, at 64-80, one of seven teams with a worse record than Baltimore.

The equation is simple: Pittsburgh’s offense is dreadful, last in the league in homers, slugging, and wOBA.

This is a team that does not swing for the fences, or if they do swing, they don’t reach them, often. Their center fielder, Oneil Cruz, is leading the team in homers (19), which is kind of unusual. Players not hitting for power include first baseman Spencer Horwitz (7 HR in 91 G) and left fielder Tommy Pham (8 in 106 G). Old friend Andrew McCutchen is their regular DH, and he’s hitting OK, but by no means up to his old standards: .244 BA, .386 SLG, .726 OPS.

After facing NL's best, Orioles receive visit from Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles have gone through similar seasons, including manager changes this year.

They get a chance to compare notes Tuesday night in Baltimore for the opener of a three-game series.

The Orioles (66-77) are going from playing two of the best teams in the National League, winning five of six games against the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers, to a matchup up with one of the NL's worst teams.

The Pirates (64-80) are on a three-game losing streak after they were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers. That followed taking all three games in a home sweep of the Dodgers.

Pittsburgh Pirates Make Four Lineup Changes vs. Baltimore Orioles

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates begin their road trip with a three-game series vs. the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards, with a few changes to their lineup.

Tommy Pham returns in left field and bats fourth for the Pirates. He comes in for Ji Hwan Bae, who started the series finale vs. the Milwaukee Brewers at PNC Park on Sept. 7, the same day the Pirates recalled him from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Jared Triolo, who played third base vs. the Brewers, moves back to shortstop and stays in leadoff for the Pirates.

Rookie Cam Devanney takes over at third base and bats ninth for the Pirates. He hit his first RBI in the big leagues in the 10-2 loss to the Brewers and will remain a key fixture at third base for the remainder of the season.
