TIFF 2025: Black Rabbit’s gut-wrenching view of American life

Black Rabbit is one of those series, like Breaking Bad and Ozark, where the clock is ticking and the characters are sweating and the rubber-band tension is winding tighter and tighter until you think it just has to snap. It’s terrific. (It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday and arrives on Netflix Sept. 18.)
After years of struggling, good things are finally about to happen for Jake Friedken (Jude Law). His restaurant/VIP hangout, Black Rabbit, is the coolest spot in New York City, tucked under the Brooklyn Bridge – fun fact, the building in real life is the oldest continuously operating bar/restaurant in the city – with the hottest chef, Roxie (Amaka Okafor); the freshest interior designer, Estelle (Cleopatra Coleman); and the hippest backer, Wes (Sope Dirisu), a star musician and entrepreneur, who’s also Estelle’s boyfriend and Jake’s best pal.

The duo headline a handsome but unconvincing thriller set in gritty New York City
So much of “Black Rabbit” is just a little bit off. It’s almost there, but it’s not quite right. The performances aren’t quite convincing. The setting is not rendered clearly enough. The plot is slightly miscalibrated. Nothing on its own is enough to make the show unwatchable, but it all adds up to something that isn’t as good as it should be for the genre it’s working in and the level of budget and talent involved.
The limited series is a New York City crime thriller starring Jude Law and Jason Bateman as dysfunctional brothers Jake (Law) and Vince Friedken (Bateman). They used to be partners in a Lower Manhattan lounge and restaurant called the Black Rabbit — named after their hipster-era indie rock band the Black Rabbits — but Vince’s addictions and instability led to him getting the boot. In the years since, Jake has led the restaurant to success, and is on the verge of starting a new place that will bring him to the pinnacle of the New York restaurant world — if he can get the money together, that is. Vince, meanwhile, is in big trouble, and comes back east looking for his brother to bail him out. He needs to pay off gambling debts to some violent gangsters led by Joe Mancuso (Troy Kotsur) and the clock is ticking. Jake knows his brother is bad news, but he can’t say no to helping him, and as Vince comes back into Jake’s business and life, their toxic bond threatens to destroy them both.

Jason Bateman's world premiere for Black Rabbit at the Toronto Film Festival became a family affair as his wife Amanda Anka, and their daughters Francesca and Maple, attended the Sept. 7 event.
After all, the Juno star and wife Amanda Anka's daughters Francesca, 18, and Maple, 13, were all grown up as they attended the world premiere of his new series Black Rabbit at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival Sept. 7.
For the rare family outing, Jason arrived in a gray button-up and black pants and the Morning Show producer opted for black satin capri slacks and a matching buttoned vest. As for his teens, Francesca donned a black sheer mini dress with cascading ruffles while Maple wore a brown satin maxi dress.
