Hurricane Kiko barrels toward Hawaii prompting state of emergency ahead of massive waves, rip currents

FOX Weather Meteorologist Jane Minar has the latest advisory and updates on Hurricane Kiko. The cyclone has weakened slightly to a Category 2 storm with 110 mph winds. Kiko is still forecast to pass north of the Hawaiian islands.

HONOLULU – A state of emergency remains in effect across the state of Hawaii as powerful Hurricane Kiko continues to barrel across the Central Pacific Ocean on a path bringing it close to the Aloha State this week.

Hawaii's acting governor declared the statewide state of emergency over the weekend as the powerful storm ripped across the Pacific as a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher). By Sunday afternoon, Kiko was downgraded to a Category 2 storm.

Maps show Hurricane Kiko's path and forecast in Pacific as it moves west toward Hawaii

Hurricane Kiko is swirling in the Pacific Ocean and heading west in a direction toward Hawaii.

Forecasters warned that swells from the storm could reach the Hawaiian Islands by the end of the weekend and cause life-threatening surf and rip currents. On Saturday night, forecasters at the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said Kiko has been strengthening over the Central Pacific as it moved west-northwestward.

With a maximum sustained wind near 140 mph, Kiko is a powerful Category 4 storm. As of the NHC's latest update at 11 p.m. Eastern Time, the hurricane was about 860 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii.

Maui and the Big Island are expected to see swells generated by the storm by Sunday and last through midweek, according to forecasters. The swells may produce life-threatening surf and rip currents, the hurricane center said.

Hurricane Kiko’s path shifts, sparing Hawaii from strong winds and heavy rain

Honolulu, Hawaii (AP) — Hurricane Kiko was tracking to the north of the Hawaiian islands, diminishing the threat of strong winds and widespread rain, the National Weather Service said Saturday.

Kiko was about 1,000 miles (1,609 kilometers) southeast of Hilo on the Big Island Saturday morning and was forecast to approach the state early to middle next week. Maximum sustained winds were 130 mph (215 kph), the weather service said.

At a Category 4 hurricane Saturday, Kiko was expected to gradually weaken over the next several days.

On Friday, acting Hawaii Gov. Sylvia Luke issued an emergency proclamation declaring a state of emergency to prepare for possible inclement weather from Kiko.
