The opening hours of Hell Is Us are brilliantly confusing. The game tasks you with getting up to speed on a complicated civil war between the Palomists and Sabinians. A deluge of proper nouns is unleashed: Lymbic weaponry, Guardian Detectors, and more. But the clearest way the game communicates that you should feel utterly dumbfounded is through the cryptic stone panels scattered amid its ravaged, Eastern Europe-coded setting; you’re unable to actually read the text engraved in these tablets. At every turn in the first levels — a dank forest and then a fetid bog — meaning and, just as importantly, understanding, eludes.

Hell Is Us (PC) Review

Hell Is Us is an atypical action-adventure game that embraces old-school design philosophies in a modern light, creating a unique and hauntingly dark slow burn of an experience.

As a massive fan of the Deus Ex reboot games, I was thrilled to find out that Hell Us‘s art direction has Jonathan Jacques-Belletête at the helm as the Creative Director and art lead for the game, the same person responsible for bringing Deus Ex to life. Instead of a futuristic mechanized world, Hell is Us takes place in the 90s and features a grounded aesthetic juxtaposed with unearthly entities called Hollow Walkers that look akin to contemporary surrealist statutes come to life.

Hell is Us review – nightmarish adventure treads a fine line between cryptic and tedious

Strange synths rumble and whir in an electronic hum. Wind chimes tinkle. An unearthly screech in the distance and the bass escalates in intensity. Rain tickles the DualSense. What exactly is out there?

Hell is Us is a masterpiece in mood, and much of that comes down to its score – or, more of a soundscape, really – from composer Stephane Primeau. It lends the game such a heady, oppressive atmosphere. It comes as no surprise, since Primeau was previously in a metal band; the music is dark, haunting, unsettling. I recommend playing with headphones.

That sonic tone is fitting for an adventure game exploring the cyclical nature of war. Hell is Us, as the title suggests, is a nightmare. Demonic entities shift across muddy trenches and urban streets licked by flames; tanks lay abandoned half-submerged in marshy wasteland; and innocent (or sometimes not so innocent) citizens are caught in the crossfire of a country wracked by civil war and supernatural forces.
