Veteran safety finds new NFL home just hours after being cut by Broncos
Just hours after being released by the Denver Broncos on Tuesday, veteran safety Sam Franklin is set to sign with the Buffalo Bills, according to KPRC-TV's Aaron Wilson. It's not yet clear if Franklin is joining Buffalo's active roster or practice squad.
Franklin, 29, is a vested veteran with more than four years of experience, so he is not subject to the NFL's waiver wire, allowing him to join any team immediately as a free agent.
When the Broncos signed Franklin to a one-year contract in April, they gave him $1.337 million fully guaranteed. After the Bills sign the safety, they will cover $1.17 million that was previously owed by Denver.
Broncos have released safety Sam Franklin Jr.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Denver Broncos have released safety Sam Franklin Jr. The sixth-year veteran signed with Denver in 2025 on a one-year fully guaranteed contract, competing mostly on special teams and at safety throughout training camp.
Franklin Jr. signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted college free agent after the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent his first five seasons there contributing on defense and special teams. He totaled 105 tackles, 1 sack, a forced fumble, an interception that ended up being a 99-yard pick six. He joined the Broncos in free agency this year, but did not do enough to make the active roster.

Bills Signing S Sam Franklin
According to Aaron Wilson, the Bills are signing S Sam Franklin to an undisclosed contract.
Wilson does not clarify whether this is an active roster or practice squad deal with Buffalo.
Franklin, 29, went undrafted out of Temple in 2020 before signing with the Panthers.
He wound up making the active roster and appeared in 14 games for the team during the 2020 season.
Carolina elected to tender him as a restricted free agent before re-signing him to a new one-year contract for the 2023 season. The team re-signed him to a one-year deal for the 2024 season.
Franklin caught up on with the Broncos this offseason before being released during roster cuts.
