Manchester United Women: Why are they playing PSV Eindhoven in Sweden in Women's Champions League?

Manchester United have to navigate an unusual qualification process to reach the main draw of the Women's Champions League.

The tournament has a new format after Uefa expanded the group stage of the competition from 16 to 18 teams for 2025-26.

Chelsea qualified directly by winning the Women's Super League, while Arsenal qualified by triumphing in the Women's Champions League.

Manchester United however have to qualify for the competition after finishing behind Chelsea and Arsenal in the league last season.

Marc Skinner's side have never qualified for the main draw of the Women's Champions League.

The qualification stage is split into two mini tournaments – a 'champions path' and a 'league path'.

Revealed: Our travelling squad for Sweden

Manchester United Women boss Marc Skinner has announced his travelling squad for our upcoming UEFA Women's Champions League second-round qualifying games in Stockholm.

The Reds face PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday in our first assignment and, should we emerge victorious, we would then face the winners of local side Hammarby and Ukrainians Metalist Kharkiv in our Group 1 final, three days later.

A loss against the Dutch side will not spell the end of our European hopes, however, as the runners-up and third-placed side – decided by a play-off between the losing semi-finalists – in each mini-tournament will progress to the new Women’s Europa Cup.

Who will captain Manchester United in Champions League qualifier against PSV?

Manchester United go head to head against PSV in a Champions League qualifier on Wednesday and Maya Le Tissier is set to captain the side.

Le Tissier has been United captain since 2024 but this season she could face her toughest challenge yet.

Although she was at the club the last time Manchester United were in the Champions League, Maya Le Tissier has never captained the Red Devils in the Champions League.

Le Tissier joined United from Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2022 and was first named captain in 2024.

When United face PSV on Wednesday night, the 23-year-old will lead the team out.
