Is the monsoon ready to cut loose in Phoenix? Rain, wind, flooding possible
After a few false starts, Arizona's monsoon could finally bring some of the most dramatic weather Phoenix has seen this season, with high storm chances and strong winds, blowing dust and flash flooding possible from Aug. 25 and continuing into the week.
“We’ll see threats ranging from just about everything, with strong winds and even some localized heavy rain,” said Tom Frieders, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix.
Storm chances climb to 40 and as high as 70% across the region, with the highest risk in the afternoon on Aug. 25. Southern Arizona will see the first round of storms before activity spreads north.
First Alert: Monsoon moisture in Arizona fuels storm chances on Monday
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Prepare for some weather changes this week, including showers, thunderstorms, strong winds, and cooler temperatures.
Today and tomorrow are First Alert Weather Days in the Valley for increased rain and thunderstorm chances. A Flood Watch is in effect this afternoon for southwest Arizona due to strong thunderstorms that could bring heavy rain, potentially leading to flooding. Strong thunderstorms are capable of bringing 1-2 inches of rain to this part of the state, including Yuma, Gila Bend and Tucson.
With our monsoon ridge of high pressure out to the northeast, a trough is also pushing in along the California coast. This setup allows more moisture to move into the state under a southeasterly flow. Models are showing showers and storms from the south moving into the Phoenix metro this evening. This could create blowing dust and heavy rain in the area.

MOST ACCURATE FORECAST: Monsoon storm chances ramping up!
Here in the Valley, our best chances will be tonight between 7 and 10 p.m. Any monsoon storms that move in could bring gusty winds, blowing dust, frequent lightning and heavy downpours that could lead to flooding.
Blowing Dust Advisories are already in effect across the southeast Valley and much of central and southern Arizona in anticipation of the threat of blowing dust with these monsoon storms.
The threat of blowing dust also triggered a High Pollution Advisory in the Valley today. If dust picks up and moves in, make sure to limit your time outside so you don't breathe it in.
