Red Sox move struggling Buehler to bullpen
The Boston Red Sox are moving Walker Buehler to the bullpen, manager Alex Cora said before the team's Friday night game against the Yankees in New York.
Buehler, signed to a one-year, $21.05 million contract this offseason, has a 5.40 ERA in 22 starts this season.
The right-hander failed to make it to the fifth inning in his latest start, allowing two runs on four hits while walking four in four innings before getting pulled by Cora.
Buehler, speaking after the loss to the Baltimore Orioles, said the early hook was warranted.
"At some point, the leash I'm given has been earned," he told reporters. "I think they did the right thing in coming to get me before the [Gunnar] Henderson at-bat. Our bullpen has been great. For me personally, I think everything went according to plan until the fifth. You go double, four-pitch walk. The way I've been throwing it, it all kind of makes sense."
Red Sox Move Walker Buehler To Bullpen
August 22: Buehler is indeed headed to the bullpen, Cora told reporters (video provided by NESN). Monday’s start has yet to be determined.
August 21: A disappointing season for Red Sox’s righty Walker Buehler continued on Tuesday. He only completed four innings while allowing four hits and as many walks in a home loss to the Orioles. It was the fourth time in his past five outings that Buehler issued at least three free passes, and his season earned run average is up to 5.40 across 22 starts.
Asked this evening whether Buehler would make his scheduled start on Monday, manager Alex Cora said the team “(hasn’t) talked about it yet” (via Tim Healey of The Boston Globe). While Cora wasn’t interested in discussing the situation publicly, Chris Cotillo of MassLive reports that the Sox are having internal conversations about moving Buehler to the bullpen. It’s not out of the question that he pitches in relief at some point during this weekend’s series against the Yankees. That’d obviously rule him out of starting Monday in what would be a rematch against Baltimore.

Red Sox relegate veteran starter Walker Buehler to bullpen ahead of stretch run
The Boston Red Sox are moving right-hander Walker Buehler to the bullpen, manager Alex Cora told reporters on Friday, hours before first pitch against the New York Yankees (GameTracker).
The Red Sox elected not to announce who will take Buehler's spot in their starting rotation. His turn to start is due up next on Monday, meaning they'll have a few days to decide for certain. Left-hander Kyle Harrison, obtained in the Rafael Devers trade, would be available on five days' rest and would be making his Boston debut if he is indeed the choice.
Buehler, 31, joined Boston on a one-year pact worth $21 million with a mutual option for the 2026 campaign. In 22 starts to date, he amassed a 5.40 ERA (76 ERA+) and a 1.52 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His performance was considered to be below replacement, according to Baseball Reference's calculations — that despite a recent run that saw him post a 3.77 ERA in his past eight starts. (To be fair, he did so while recording nearly as many walks as strikeouts.)
