Rugby Championship marks next phase of Wallabies’ redemption arc | Jack Snape

Australia appear on the up after a memorable Lions series but playing South Africa at a venue where they haven’t won for over 60 years poses a daunting challenge

The Wallabies will look to the past against the world champion Springboks by rolling out two 35-year-olds in the halves to open their campaign in the Rugby Championship, the southern hemisphere’s most prestigious trophy that now also appears on its last legs.

Saturday’s clash at Ellis Park, beamed into Australia’s east coast early on Sunday morning, marks the next phase of the Wallabies’ redemption arc which has risen from the pool stage exit of the 2023 World Cup, through this year’s valiant British & Irish Lions series defeat and towards a tilt at the Webb Ellis Cup on home soil in 2027.

Springboks’ new approach is great news for the game of rugby

This week marks the 92nd anniversary of the first Test match to be held at Ellis Park between the Springboks and the Wallabies. The Boks hold an dominant 9-1 record in Johannesburg.

The only Australian victory in Johannesburg came when the great Wallaby captain, John Thornett, led his team off the pitch as winners way back in 1963.

It is 15 years since the Wallabies had any success in South Africa and they have notched up only four wins there since the game went professional.

Not great stats when arriving at a venue that is 1,753 metres above sea level. With much less oxygen in the air, visiting teams physically struggle to maintain the mighty effort required to storm the fortress that is Ellis Park.

South Africa's Springboks will kick off their Rugby Championship defence with a clash against the somewhat resurgent Australia at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Australian rugby has been in the doldrums for some years, but the Wallabies have made tentative steps forward under Joe Schmidt. Their 2-1 series defeat to the British & Irish Lions could easily have gone the other way, with Australia squandering a convincing lead in the second Test.
