Great.com founder Erik Bergman donates $1m to clean water projects in Africa
Bergman, who left Catena in 2017, said he still enjoyed working in the online gambling sector but wanted to channel the revenue it generates into causes with tangible impact. “The intention with Great.com has always been to build an affiliate empire, but where 100% of the profits goes to charity,” he said.
“I take zero salary. I haven’t taken a dime out of it for myself. Everything is just being given away because I made enough money during Catena years that I don’t really need anything more.”
While climate change has been a major focus for Great.com, Bergman said water projects felt more tangible and motivating. “Carbon dioxide is invisible, but bad water is very visible,” he said. “It’s easier to kind of understand the importance of it.”
