‘Shrek 5’ Moves To Summer 2027, Untitled Illumination Event Pic Going Earlier
Universal Pictures said Monday it is moving DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 from December 23, 2026 to Wednesday, June 30, 2027. Essentially, the summer is better corridor for the mega return of the green fairy-tale ogre and friends; that’s the season he’s always dwelled in. It will rep 17 years since the previous Shrek movie, 2010’s Shrek Forever After.
In addition, Universal said today that an untitled Illumination event movie is going earlier in 2027, from June 30 to April 16. It takes the place of an untitled Universal event film that had been on the release date calendar.
Shrek repertoire members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are coming back to voice their signature roles of Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, respectively, As previously announced, Zendaya is joining the cast.
‘Shrek 5’ Release Date Delayed to June 2027
Universal and DreamWorks Animation have postponed the fifth “Shrek” film from Dec. 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027. This is the second release date delay for “Shrek 5,” which was originally set for July 2026. The studio didn’t give a reason for the hold-up, but Universal has fielded outsized success with animated fare — such as “Despicable Me” franchise, “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” — in the summer months.
On its new release date, “Shrek 5” will open less than a week after Sony’s animated “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.” On its prior date in December 2026, the family film was scheduled to debut in the wake of Disney’s “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Ice Age 6.”

‘Shrek 5’ Bumped to June 2027 at DreamWorks Animation
DreamWorks Animation’s latest sequel, which reunites Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, along with newcomer Zendaya, is moving from December 23, 2026 to June 30, 2027.
Additionally, Universal has moved an untitled Illumination film from June 30, 2027, up to April 16, 2027.
This move means that “Shrek 5” will avoid going up against Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday,” which also opens for Christmas 2026. (It will be the first “Avengers” film to open during the holidays.)
Instead, “Shrek 5” adds to what has suddenly become a stacked lineup of animated blockbusters in June 2027. While Universal is seeking to capitalize from the extended Fourth of July weekend, with the holiday itself falling on a Sunday in 2027, “Shrek 5” will be released a week after Sony’s “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” and two weeks after the Pixar original film “Gatto.”
