Over 50 million on alert for dangerous heat in the Southwest
High temperatures are expected to be well into the 100s and may go up to 115.
Record-breaking heat continues for parts of the desert Southwest into the weekend, with sweltering temperatures beginning to expand east into the Heartland.
Extreme heat warnings remain in effect for parts of the desert Southwest — including Palm Springs, California; Phoenix; and Tucson, Arizona.
High temperatures are expected to reach well into the 100s and up to 115 in spots.
Heat advisories are also in effect on Friday for other areas of the Four Corners region stretching into the Plains as the heat begins to shift east.
How hot was it in Phoenix? The hottest August day in 120 years
Another day, another heat record in Phoenix, as America's hottest city sweltered through its warmest August day in over 120 years of record-keeping.
The temperature soared to 118 degrees at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport at 3:40 p.m. on Aug. 7. The previous record for the hottest August day was 117 degrees, reached most recently in 2023.
The daily record high of 112 degrees was broken before lunchtime as the heat continued to build through the afternoon.
"We're looking at unusually hot temperatures this week across the Phoenix metro," said Mark O'Malley, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Phoenix. "There's a strong area of high pressure which has settled directly over central Arizona."

Happy Friday! Highs in the Valley won't be as hot today as they were on Thursday, but temps will still be above normal as we head into the weekend.
PHOENIX – While we're still in the midst of our heat spell, the worst has finally passed.
On Thursday afternoon at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the high temperature reached 118 degrees. This set a new record high temperature for the day, but also a record for the month of August. Record highs were also set around the state, such as in Show Low and Casa Grande.
The forecast high will cap at 113 degrees on Friday. This is still warm enough to continue the Extreme Heat Warning, which is in place through this evening. It will be dry through the day, and breezy to windy across the state.
