Brush fire ignites in Rancho Bernardo area

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Cal Fire San Diego responded to a brush fire that ignited in the Rancho Bernardo area Friday afternoon.

According to the Watch Duty app, the fire near the intersection of Camino Del Norte and Bernardo Center Drive was about an acre in size as of 2:45 p.m., and it had a moderate rate of spread, incident command reported.

Watch Duty says firefighters asked law enforcement to close Camino Del Norte as they work to put it out.

A large plume of black-gray smoke towered above the community at 3 p.m., with flames burning in an area of grass and chaparral vegetation near a large cluster of tract housing. Fire officials describe the rate of spread as moderate.

So far, the fire has burned 10-12 acres, officials said. At least one firefighting helicopter is on scene, as is a fixed-wing aircraft, and ground crews are also working the fire. At 3:15, authorities said "crews were making good progress," and that a "structure defense is established at an apartment complex to the east."

Fire crews battle brush fire in Rancho Bernardo

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — Fire crews are battling a brush fire that is burning in Rancho Bernardo on Friday afternoon. The fire is sending large plumes of smoke into the air that can be seen miles away.

The fire quickly burned 10 acres with a moderate rate of spread.

The fire was initially reported around 2:30 p.m. on Friday near Camino Del Norte and Bernardo Center Drive and quickly burned along a hillside close to homes.

An Evacuation Warning has been requested for Zone SDC-1219, per incident command.
