Who is Tereza Valentova? Meet the Czech teenager who's not backing down

From stress fractures and a coaching reset to a seven-match win streak, Tereza Valentova has found her footing on the Hologic WTA Tour, while rediscovering joy in the process.

At first glance, Tereza Valentova's transition from a standout junior career to the Hologic WTA Tour appears seamless. The 2024 Roland Garros girls' champion just 14 months ago, Valentova scored a milestone win on home soil at the Livesport Prague Open on Wednesday, upsetting No. 2 seed Rebecca Sramkova 7-6(1), 7-5 after saving two set points in the opener.

The result is her first Top 50 win and it puts her into her first tour-level quarterfinal, extending her 2025 record at all levels to 38-8. Valentova, 18, started the year by winning the ITF W75 in Porto, but as she's moved up the levels, her rate of wins has only increased.

Prague | Valentova – one of five Czechs into the quarters

18-year old Tereza Valentova pulled off the biggest upset of the week at the WTA 250 Livesport Prague Open on Wednesday when she defeated the No 2 seed, Rebecca Sramkova from Slovakia, 7-6(1) 7-5, after saving 2 set points in the opener.

“It was an extremely tough match, Rebecca played really well,” a thrilled Valentova said afterwards. “I’m glad I managed to adapt to the conditions: Playing in that type of wind wasn’t exactly pleasant, but it was tough for both of us. I was nervous, I wanted to win so badly.”

The wind clearly played a major role in the match, evidenced by an unusaul moment late in the second set, at 5–5 and 15–30, when Sramkova completely missed her first serve, with the ball landing beside her.
