Review & setlist: Coldplay rolls the love (and some weirdness) into Gillette Stadium
Coldplay, with Ayra Starr and Elyanna (and The Weirdos), Tuesday, July 15, Gillette Stadium, Foxborough.
On Tuesday night, Gillette Stadium really did turn into a sky full of stars — and fireworks.
Coldplay transported the audience through space and time, as the band seamlessly traveled through their discography, ebbing and flowing from their newer synth-pop of “Music of the Spheres” to slower 2000s hits.
The band appeared on the floor of the stadium, walking toward the stage steps at 8:54 p.m., starting off strong and upbeat with “Higher Power” and “Adventure of a Lifetime” to get the crowd quickly on its feet. They followed two openers: Ayra Starr, a Nigerian-born Afrobeats singer, and Elyanna, a Palestinian and Chilean artist whose music intersects Arabic sounds and R&B.

At Gillette, Coldplay assemble a glimmering constellation of pop
When Coldplay performed at Gillette Stadium for the first time 24 years ago, their soft pop-rock wasnât exactly received with open arms. As one of the performers at WBCNâs annual River Rave in 2001, the British band was sandwiched between sets from American Hi-Fi and Dropkick Murphys â both hard-hitting local rock actsâ on the eventâs revolving main stage. The way frontman Chris Martin recalls it, some boos greeted the band as their side of the stage spun to face the audience.
âLooks like weâre going to be massive in Boston,â Martin says he quipped at the time.
But he neednât have worried. By the time the group returned to Foxborough in 2016 and 2017, Massachusetts had changed its tune from annoyance to adoration. The pattern continued at Tuesdayâs sold-out performance at Gillette Stadium, which was the first of two shows in town on the bandâs long-running âMusic of the Spheresâ world tour.
