Lee Westwood: European tour banned me then asked me to promote Ryder Cup
Exclusive: 52-year-old talks up Portrush prospects, talks down Ryder Cup captaincy chances and fears for future of DP World Tour
Lee Westwood’s first visit to Royal Portrush was in 1993 when he was one of the favourites to win the Amateur Championship. His mother, Trish, stepped in as caddie.
“It peed down and she didn’t keep the clubs dry,” Westwood recalls. “I didn’t qualify for the matchplay stages and I told Mum it was her fault. She told me that she had managed to keep my nappies dry for all those years. There is no arguing with that.”
I’m the 500/1 shot back at The Open after three years and my wife is caddying for me
Golf fans may be shocked to hear that Lee Westwood has been given odds of 500/1 to win this year's Open Championship.
One of Britain's finest ever golfers, the 52-year-old boasts 44 wins in his hugely successful 22-year professional career, which has seen him previously ranked as world no.1.
And given his enormous pedigree, it perhaps comes as an even bigger surprise that Westwood has not featured on the major stage for three years.
His last appearance came at the 2022 Open, with the Englishman's decision to join the breakaway LIV Golf Series in the same year impacting his chances of making golf's biggest events.

Dundonald hosts Open masterclass as Lee Westwood seals return and Youtube star struggles
Lee Westwood, a former world No. 1 and now a LIV Golf star, qualified for his first major since the 150th Open at St. Andrews in 2022, after an impressive performance during final qualifying at Dundonald Links.
The golfer, who currently ranks at No. 4,639 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), demonstrated he's still got it by finishing top and securing a spot for the forthcoming Open at Royal Portrush, starting on July 17.
In Scotland's west coast, Westwood shot rounds of 70 and 67 to finish as leader of the pack with seven-under-par, narrowly edging out Daniel Young and Angel Hidalgo. Jesper Sandborg and Connor Graham also clinched their invites to Northern Ireland in the tense competition, where Graham triumphed over Paul O'Hara in a playoff.
