O's trade for catcher Jackson from Yanks as Sánchez likely out 8-10 weeks

ATLANTA — It’s been an unbelievably unlucky two-plus weeks for Orioles catchers, and the misfortune continued over the weekend in Atlanta.

On Sunday, Baltimore placed Gary Sánchez on the 10-day injured list due to a PCL sprain he sustained in his right knee during Saturday’s 9-6, 10-inning win over the Braves. The 32-year-old is expected to miss 8-10 weeks, per interim manager Tony Mansolino, who said the catcher met with doctors upon returning to Baltimore this week.

Sánchez became the fourth O’s catcher to hit the IL, with each doing so since June 21 — Adley Rutschman (left oblique strain) on June 21, Maverick Handley (concussion) on June 23 and Chadwick Tromp (lower back strain) on Tuesday.

O's acquire catcher from Yankees; Sanchez to IL

The Baltimore Orioles acquired minor league catcher Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees on Sunday, agreeing to send international bonus pool money and either a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Jackson was the No. 6 pick of the Seattle Mariners in the 2014 MLB draft and has a career batting average of .132 in 124 games with the Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays. He has six career home runs and 24 RBIs and has thrown out 29.1 percent (16-of-55) potential base stealers.

The 29-year-old will provide depth at the position for the Orioles, who lost starter Adley Rutschman through at least the All-Star break due to the left oblique strain that sent him to the injured list for the first time in his career.

Gary Sánchez Likely To Miss 8-10 Weeks

Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino informed members of the media today that catcher Gary Sánchez is likely to miss eight to ten weeks due to his right knee sprain. Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com was among those to relay the timeline and the specific diagnosis, which is a sprain of the catcher’s right posterior cruciate ligament.

It’s yet another unwelcome development in a season that’s been full of them for the Orioles. Sánchez’s .231/.297/.418 batting line (101 wRC+) is “only” a touch better than league average, but he’d been riding a blazing .295/.348/.574 hot streak with five homers over his past 66 plate appearances. That torrid stretch dovetailed with IL placements for Adley Rutschman, Maverick Handley and Chadwick Tromp. Sánchez now becomes the Orioles’ fourth catcher on the injured list.
