Frank Layden, Larger Than Life Utah Jazz Coach, Passes Away At 93

SALT LAKE CITY – Legendary Utah Jazz head coach Frank Layden has passed away at the age of 93.
Members close to the situation confirmed the news of Layden’s passing to KSL Sports. ABC4’s Wesley Ruff first reported the story on social media.
Layden spent seven and a half seasons as head coach of the Jazz between 1981 and 1989. The coach amassed 277 wins in 571 games, ranking third-most amongst wins by coaches in Jazz history.

Frank Layden, known around Utah for his impact in the basketball community, has died at the age of 93.
Layden passed away Wednesday, the Deseret News confirmed. ABC 4âs Wesley Ruff was the first to report the news.
The enigmatic Layden was born in Brooklyn in 1932 and began his coaching career at nearby Niagara University in New York. After eight years there, he spent 1976-79 with the NBAâs Atlanta Hawks as an assistant coach.
He was named general manager of the New Orleans Jazz in 1979, then was named head coach of the Jazz, which had then moved to Salt Lake City, in 1981.

Longtime Utah Jazz coach, general manager and franchise legend Frank Layden has passed awa — Longtime Utah Jazz coach, general manager and franchise legend Frank Layden has passed away. He was 93 years old.
Layden became the Jazz coach two years after the franchise moved from New Orleans to Salt Lake City. He coached from the 1981 to 1988 seasons. He was hired in 1979 as the general manager, and maintained those duties while coaching.
He was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 1984 after Utah went 45-37, marking the franchise’s first winning season.
During the same season he was also named the NBA Executive of the Year.
