Yankees bring home run thunder after rain delay to rout Mariners

Flashes of lightning beyond the outfield wall were drawing oohs and aahs from the Bronx crowd all night, even after a brief rain delay concluded in the fifth inning.

Giancarlo Stanton and Austin Wells finally provided the thunder to go along with the electrical storm, with massive home runs in the sixth inning as the Yankees downed the Mariners 10-3 for their second straight win following an ugly 6-16 stretch.

Aaron Judge also went deep for the 34th time this season with a solo blast in the seventh, remaining two behind breakout star Cal Raleigh of the Mariners — who ripped a two-run homer in the eighth — for the MLB lead.

NEW YORK — What exactly happened during the 35 minutes the tarp covered the Yankee Stadium infield Tuesday night? Not much, Austin Wells said — just “some time to relax.” But when the skies cleared, the Yankees’ bats finally woke up. Bad weather didn’t mean bad news.

Held to just a Cody Bellinger single through the first four innings by a sharp Logan Gilbert, the Yankees erupted once play resumed, thumping the Mariners, 10-3, in the opener of a three-game series in the Bronx.

“We were just getting balls more in the middle of the plate,” said Giancarlo Stanton, who broke the game open with a three-run blast off Gilbert in the sixth inning. “Just being on time with balls in the zone. I think the third time through [the order] helps, too.”

Yankees change their infield dynamic, power their way to victory against Seattle

NEW YORK – Tuesday night’s Bronx power show was a solid follow-up to a Subway Series-salvaging win Sunday afternoon.

Late in a 10-3 Yankees win against Seattle, the 38,641 fans even caught some of MLB’s home run battle, with the Mariners’ Cal Raleigh extending his lead with No. 36 – right after Aaron Judge launched No. 34.

More importantly, Giancarlo Stanton’s timely three-run homer – his second of the season – extended a 1-0 lead in the sixth and Austin Wells now has three homers in his last three games.

Wells even drew a walk, just his third in his last 66 plate appearance, to further advance the argument that he’s finally becoming the consistent lineup we anticipated.
