Alex Bregman ‘getting close’ to Red Sox return; when could that be?

WASHINGTON — Alex Bregman did not travel with the Red Sox on their quick three-day trip to Washington, D.C. But there’s at least a chance he’ll be back in the lineup soon after the club returns home Monday.

Asked if Bregman would return during the week-long homestand preceding the All-Star break, manager Alex Cora said: “I hope so.”

“Alex is back in Boston. He’s doing his rehab,” Cora said. “Talked to him yesterday. A lot better, so we’re getting close.”

Bregman, who has been out since May 23 with a right quad strain, ramped up baseball activities last week and said he’s close to 100%. He has repeatedly said he believes he can return without going on a rehab assignment and at this point, the Red Sox seem to agree.

Alex Cora provides another hopeful update on Alex Bregman’s return from quad injury

When the Red Sox return to Boston for their final homestand before the All-Star break, there’s a chance their top hitter could be back in the lineup.

Alex Cora didn’t rule out the possibility that Alex Bregman could play in either of the upcoming series against the Rockies or Rays.

“I hope so,” the Red Sox manager told reporters when asked if Bregman could return in the upcoming week (via MassLive’s Chris Cotillo). He’s doing his rehab. I talked to him yesterday. A lot better, so we’re getting close.”

In a follow-up, Cora was asked if Bregman’s return could come as soon as Monday.

Red Sox's Latest Alex Bregman Decision Is 'A Mistake,' Boston Insider Says

The temptation to bring Alex Bregman back as soon as possible is unmistakable. Is the risk even greater?

Bregman, the Boston Red Sox's star third baseman who has been out since May 24 with a right quad strain, appears to be just about ready to return to game action. Although they haven't officially announced anything, the Red Sox have hinted several times that he won't require a rehab stint.

Entering play on Sunday, the Red Sox are once again exactly .500, for the league-leading 16th time this season. They have a seven-game homestand looming against the Colorado Rockies and Tampa Bay Rays, then the All-Star break, which will give them four straight days off.
