Penn State's 2025 season went from national title hopes to one of the most disappointing seasons in a month's span of time, culminating in a historic collapse that saw the once No. 2-ranked Nittany Lions lose four straight games, fire their head coach and become the first FBS team ever to suffer back-to-back defeats as a 20-point favorite.
The defeat to Northwestern proved to be the final straw for Head Coach James Franklin, who was fired on the following Sunday morning with the team’s record at 3-3 (0-3 Big Ten) and their national title aspirations completely extinguished. Franklin, who had signed a 10-year, $8 million-per-year extension, leaves Penn State on the hook for a massive buyout of approximately $50 million — the second-highest in college football history.

Terry Smith brings clarity to mysterious 'IF' slogan worn against Iowa
Penn State football interim head coach Terry Smith came out in Week 8 sporting a new slogan with the rest of his team.
For his first game taking over head coach responsibilities, he was focused on getting the Nittany Lions (3-4, 0-4 Big Ten) back to their regular routines and keeping the locker room in good spirits. Helping that out, he and his team wore shirts with 'IF' in big letters on the front.
"We wore jerseys at Iowa with the word 'IF.' It's those infinite possibilities that we have to make come true. We have to believe that we're going to make the play," Smith said. "All four of those losses, there were plays to be made in the fourth quarter."
