Nobel Prize Winner Wole Soyinka Says the U.S. Revoked His Visa
The author Wole Soyinka, a vocal critic of President Trump, told the Nigerian press he did not attend a visa renewal interview requested by the State Department.
The Nobel Prize-winning Nigerian author Wole Soyinka said Tuesday that the visa allowing him to visit the United States was revoked this month. In a letter, the U.S. consulate general in Lagos, Nigeria, did not cite a specific reason for the revocation, saying only that “additional information became available” after the visa was issued last spring.
Soyinka, 91, said in a news conference on Tuesday that he had been instructed to appear at the consulate for an additional interview last month on Sept. 11. He refused to attend.

The 91-year-old author, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1986, said the US consulate asked him to bring in his passport so his visa could be cancelled in person as new unspecified information had come to light.
Soyinka called the invitation a "rather curious love letter from an embassy" in a news conference held on Tuesday and told organisations hoping to invite him to the US "not to waste their time".
The US embassy in Nigeria has said it cannot comment on individual cases.

The first African author to win the Nobel in literature, Soyinka has been an outspoken critic of governments worldwide.
The United States has revoked the visa of Nigerian author and playwright Wole Soyinka, who became the first African writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986.
Speaking at Kongi’s Harvest Gallery in Lagos on Tuesday, Soyinka read aloud from a notice sent on October 23 from the local US consulate, asking him to arrive with his passport so that his visa could be nullified.
The author called it, with characteristic humour, a “rather curious love letter” to receive.
“We request you bring your visa to the US Consulate General Lagos for physical cancellation. To schedule an appointment, please email — et cetera, et cetera — in advance of the appointment,” Soyinka said, skimming the letter.
