Arkansas food pantries brace for surge as shutdown threatens SNAP and workers furloughed
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — As the federal government shutdown lingers, the possibility of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits being depleted is becoming more real. The White House says if the shutdown goes on for an extended period, that could very well be the case.
Food banks across Arkansas are preparing for the worst and ensuring they have enough to support furloughed workers and families who rely on assistance.
Debra Strickland Allen, founder and executive director of the First Ward Living Grace Food Pantry in Pine Bluff, says she sees the effects of food insecurity every day.
“I need everybody to know my hometown is suffering,” Allen says. “It just, it just hurts my soul.”

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – All eyes will once again be on the Senate Monday evening as lawmakers return to Washington to consider measures to reopen the government.
They are set to vote on two competing, partisan continuing resolutions, both of which have previously failed. As of their vote, the federal government would have been shuttered for going on 6 days.
Not joining them back at the Capitol is the House, with representatives ordered to stay home next week by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) as a way to put pressure on the upper chamber.
While the government is closed, the Supreme Court is looking to get back to work, kicking off their October 2025 term on Monday.
