Ken Sugiura: Postcard from Madrid includes Tim Hortons and Taco Bell

MADRID — I have to say, after two days in this city, you’ve pretty much seen everything it has to offer.

No, this is a city I’d be happy to come back to and further explore, especially if it were November and I thought to bring a jacket. It’s been in the 40s in the morning.

(I’ve been holding onto that witty gem for three days.)

Somewhere in Madrid, Facebook screeds were being written about the horror committed by the Madrid city government for standing a Christmas tree in front of its city council building in early November.

Ken Sugiura: Postcard from Madrid: My grand tour of fabled Bernabéu Stadium

MADRID — When in doubt about how to start a postcard, it’s often wise (or a sign of a lack of creativity) to Google “Spanish proverbs” and hope something hits.

Or, as the Spanish say, “El que lee mucho y anda mucho, ve mucho y sabe mucho.” (He who reads a lot and travels a lot, sees a lot and knows a lot.)

As I share the happenings of our second day in Madrid, you can judge for yourself whether the aphorism (which comes from the seminal novel “Don Quixote”) is applicable to your humble correspondent (particularly the “knows a lot” part).

The Win Column: Su casa es mi casa

It’s never hosted a Super Bowl, an SEC championship or a national title game. There are no car ads plastered on the side — and it’s not even a little bit pointy.

The Falcons “home” stadium for Sunday’s melee in Madrid is known simply as the Bernabéu (ber-nah-BEH-oo.) Spanish soccer powerhouse Real Madrid — current roster: English star Jude Bellingham, French star Kylian Mbappé, Brazilian star Vinicius Junior — has played there since 1947.

The stadium was recently renovated (did you know you can do that without tearing them down?) and has hosted World Cup matches and lots of other big deal soccer-y stuff. Also Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
