Brewers Cut Ties With Two Veterans, Including Fan Favorite Slugger

The biggest decision of the day on Monday for the Milwaukee Brewers was the choice to tender the qualifying offer to first baseman/outfielder Jake Bauers. In the process, the Brewers offered the slugger a one-year deal worth $23 million that he'll have to either pick up, or decline.

That was the big story of the day on Monday, but it wasn't the only decision made by the Brewers. Milwaukee declined two options for the 2027 season. Veteran catcher Gary Sanchez had a mutual option for the 2027 campaign that was shut down. Antonio Senzatela had a $14 million club option for the 2027 season that was declined in a no-brainer move.

Ex-Yankees Catcher Available as Free Agent After $8.5 Million Decision

The New York Yankees could consider adding catching help this offseason.

If they want, they could look toward one of their former backstops, who officially became a free agent on Monday night.

A decision on Monday makes Sanchez available to sign with any team in MLB, and if the Yankees wanted to consider a reunion, they could.

Sanchez was just a member of the World Series champion Milwaukee Brewers. He was their backup catcher behind William Contreras.

The Brewers had a built-in mutual option to Sanchez’s contract that would pay him $8.5 million for the 2027 season.

A mutual option needs both sides to accept it to go into effect. Both sides also have the potential to decline it, and if just one side declines, the player becomes a free agent.

Gary Sanchez: Mutual option not picked up

The Brewers declined their side of Sanchez's mutual option for 2027 on Monday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Sanchez had a nice season as the Brewers' No. 2 catcher, posting a .771 OPS with 12 home runs. It's unlikely the soon-to-be 34-year-old will be entrusted with a starting job anywhere, but Sanchez should draw interest as a second catcher and occasional designated hitter.
