'An Injustice to One is an Injustice to All': Students Hold Vigil to Commemorate Nolan Wells

Roughly 70 students attended a vigil for Nolan Wells on Ho Plaza Wednesday night to honor his life, contest the lack of criminal charges pursued after an investigation into his death and call for social and institutional reform for racial justice and equality.

The event organizers, Cornell NAACP, Cornell Black Students United and SoulAAn Nation, also aim to establish a shrine in Ujamaa Residential College, a historically Black program house, in Wells’ memory.

18-year-old Wells, a Black student-athlete who played on the football team at Southwest Mississippi Community College, went missing on July 4 after celebrating Independence Day with friends on a remote barrier island off the southern shore of Mississippi. His body was found near the shore two days later.

What Mississippi Still Hasn't Explained About Nolan Wells' Death

They found a wound on the back of his head. Then they closed the case.

The bruise on the back of Nolan Wells’ head measured twelve inches by eight. His mother’s independent pathologist confirmed it was blood, from a blow delivered within about four hours of the eighteen-year-old’s death. Then a Mississippi grand jury looked at that wound and everything around it and decided the State did not need to know how it got there.

Start with the paperwork, because that's where they lost the plot. Both the state’s own chief medical examiner and Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr., the forensic pathologist Nolan’s family hired, ruled the cause and manner of death undetermined. That is the official finding. Undetermined. Then District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath posted a redacted grand jury report to Facebook, calling the death consistent with drowning, and according to Mississippi Today, she texted Nolan’s mother shortly before she did it. “ Consistent with drowning" is a phrase a prosecutor types on social media. Two doctors signed their names to the document. And undetermined is not a shrug. It is the exact finding a medical examiner reaches for when the body will not give up a clean answer. Which is why it should have held this case open, not closed it.

True Crime Group Wrapped Up in Unanswered Questions

Rife with unanswered questions, the death of Nolan Wells, a Black teen from Mississippi whose body was found on an island after a Fourth of July outing with friends this summer, has drawn attention from people around the world, including in Belmont.

The library’s monthly “True Crime All The Time: Multimedia True Crime Group” grappled with the facts –– and rumors –– surrounding the death of the 18-year-old college football player during a recent gathering. The Wells case is just one of the many mysterious, real-life murders the group has discussed and analyzed since its creation.

Janina Majeran, the community outreach librarian, printed out a timeline detailing what happened leading up to Wells’ death and how officials and friends acted afterward. His family’s lawyer, civil rights attorney Ben Crump, has lobbied for a federal investigation after a grand jury declined to criminally charge anyone following a review of the teen’s autopsy, according to multiple news sources.
