‘Is this live?’: Affair rumours explode after incredible interview

Matteo Berrettini has added fuel to rumours he and fellow Italian tennis star Lorenzo Musetti have fallen out over a betrayal involving the world No.26 and Berrettini’s ex-girlfriend.

Berrettini was put under the spotlight after his first-round straight-sets win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the Vienna Open on Tuesday (AEDT), when he was asked in his on-court interview about his Italian teammate’s recent tournament victory in Lyon.

The interview followed persistent rumours of tension between the Davis Cup teammates after Berrettini ended his relationship with girlfriend Vanessa Bellini midway through this year. Musetti split with his partner Veronica Confalonieri – with whom he shares two children – that same week.

Italy confirms its team to defend the Davis Cup without the mysterious presence of Berrettini

The champion is seeking her fourth consecutive salad bowl. Italy, which already has three Davis Cups in a row, wants to extend its reign even further, and Filippo Volandri has brought back a player for Bologna who couldn’t participate last year due to injury, namely Lorenzo Musetti. Additionally, there is also the newcomer Luciano Darderi, who is making his debut in a call-up. However, he retains last year's hero, Flavio Cobolli, and the doubles players Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. However, the absence of a key player like Matteo Berrettini is notable.

Looking at Volandri's roster, Cobolli steps up to fill the void left vacant last year by Jannik Sinner and presents himself as the main Italian figure. Meanwhile, Musetti, who has had a very inconsistent year due to constant injuries, is expected to be the second option. Darderi will be the third player and could see action in Bologna if Cobolli or Musetti are not fit to take to the court in any of the ties.

Volandri's call-ups for the Final Eight in Bologna, with Bolelli and Vavassori likely in the last dance in the doubles. ItalDavis with Cobolli, Darderi, and Musetti: Berrettini is out.

Cobolli, Darderi, and Musetti will make up the singles trio, while Bolelli and Vavassori will play in the doubles: these are the five Italians called up by captain Filippo Volandri for the Davis Cup Final Eight, scheduled for November 23-29 in Bologna.

Matteo Berrettini , one of the Italian heroes of the last two editions and in fine form just yesterday, has been ruled out for now : the 30-year-old Roman, ranked No. 48, defeated Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry, No. 29, 6-4 in the ATP 500 in Vienna and will face the winner of the Cobolli-Dimitrov match in the second round. Italian Davis Cup will therefore field a Top 10 player (Cobolli is No. 6) and two Top 25 players (Darderi, No. 23 – who beat Arnaldi yesterday in the Vienna derby – and Musetti, No. 26), in addition to the tried-and-tested duo of Bolelli and Vavassori (Nos. 10 and 7 in the doubles rankings, respectively), who will most likely finish their campaign together in Bologna.
