The best Android utilities I've found aren't on Google Play
Google Play covers my bank app, streaming services, and most of the polished everyday stuff Android is built around. The more interesting apps usually live off to the side, which became pretty obvious after I installed ShizuStore on my Galaxy S24 Ultra and started poking through a catalog full of debloaters, package managers, system tweakers, and other tools built around Shizuku.
ShizuStore gives that scattered corner of Android a proper home. Shizuku gives many of those apps access to deeper Android plumbing.
ShizuStore doesn’t really come alive until Shizuku is running. Shizuku starts a privileged service through ADB or root, then compatible apps can ask to use that service for Android APIs they normally wouldn’t be allowed to call. On an unrooted phone running Android 11 or newer, Wireless Debugging is usually the easiest way in.
Google sends Android phones into 2027 with an update date mix-up
Google rolls out multiple Play system updates every month to add new features and fix underlying issues on Android devices. But its latest update seems to have sent some devices into the future, at least according to their update date. After installation, they show a Google Play system update date of January 1, 2027.
Reports of the January 2027 date first appeared on Reddit and have since spread to other social media platforms. The issue also doesn’t seem limited to a specific device or Android version.
My Google Pixel 8 Pro, Vivo X300 Ultra, and several other Android devices show the Google Play system update date as January 1, 2027, now. The incorrect date even affects older devices going back to Android 12.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra seems to have received a Google Play System update dated January 1, 2027.
Samsung smartphones and tablets receive one or more Google Play System updates almost every month. Unlike system software and app updates, which are identified by version numbers, these updates display a timestamp indicating the date, month, and year they correspond to.
However, the latest Google Play System updates for Galaxy phones come with an unusual timestamp. Yesterday, Galaxy S26 Ultra units running the stable version of One UI 9.0 received a new Google Play System update weighing around 100MB (via Kailash).
