Lakers Urged To Trade For Feisty NBA Champ Center As Kessler Backup

The Los Angeles Lakers are still without a true backup center to start the 2026-27 NBA season, and while Walker Kessler looked like a revelation on opening night, trading for another big man is still on the table for the team at some point this season.

Though the Lakers have been linked to several names in recent trade rumors, one new player could become available who might be the perfect fit to play alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves while backing up Kessler: Jaylin Williams of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Williams has been a backup center for the Thunder over the past few years, but with the addition of Aday Mara, he could be sitting on the outside of the team’s rotation and perhaps become an ideal Lakers trade target.

Aday Mara breaking out makes Jaylin Williams a realistic Lakers trade target

The Oklahoma City Thunder have created a four-player logjam in the frontcourt with starters Isaiah Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren, and reserves Aday Mara and Jaylin Williams. The Los Angeles Lakers have a need for depth at center. In rapidly approaching time, their interests may align.

Mara is already beginning to break out as a first-year player, which suggests that Williams' days as a nightly rotational fit could be numbered. If that proves to be the case, then Los Angeles should be all in on a trade for Williams

Mara was sensational during the preseason, but only so much can be taken from games that don't always feature NBA-caliber players. He hit the ground running during the regular season, however, when he matched up against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs and more than held his own.

Lakers 6’10” Dream Center Expected to Be Traded in a Blockbuster NBA Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers may push for a new backup center before the trade deadline. Not for lack of trying, but resources are limited, even though there are some interesting options around the league to explore.

One option is Daniel Gafford, whose name has come up in and around the offseason as a speculated target. The Dallas Mavericks player is one of the names that could be moved in the coming months.

According to NBC Sports’ Kurt Helin, Gafford is among a handful of players who are “most likely” to get traded soon.

“Daniel Gafford’s availability in a trade is dependent upon whether Dereck Lively can get and stay healthy,” Helin wrote. “If he does, and if rookie Morez Johnson shows he can handle backup big minutes, then Gafford becomes available.”
