78-year-old priest carried out of Colorado ICE facility by fellow detainees after judge orders release

A 78-year-old Ugandan priest, who spent more than a year in immigration detention, was released from an Aurora facility Tuesday, but he was unable to walk out on his own.

CBS Colorado cameras captured two fellow detainees carrying Edward Nalwamba from the GEO-operated ICE detention facility to his ride after staff reportedly refused to allow him to use a wheelchair beyond the facility's gate.

Nalwamba, who has lived in Colorado for more than two decades, was released after a federal judge granted his petition challenging his continued detention and ordered immigration officials to free him by Tuesday.

His release comes after 13 months in ICE custody, during which his attorney says his health deteriorated dramatically.

Colorado pastor released from ICE facility

A 79-year-old retired Ugandan pastor has been fighting for a year to stay in the United States. For now, he can take a pause.

The U.S. District Court of Colorado officially granted the petition for a writ of habeas corpus for Edward Nalwamba — an immigrant from Uganda who has lived and preached in the U.S. since 2002 — on Oct. 19, ordering Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to release the man from detention at the Aurora detention center. He was released today, Oct. 20.

“It has been a long, hard fight. It’s very exciting. He’s just thrilled,” says Joy Athanasiou, Nalwamba’s immigration attorney. “We were so concerned that if he stayed in detention a little longer, he wouldn’t make it. I am hopeful he will be able to recover some strength.”
