Mavericks Waive Dwight Powell

The Mavericks have trimmed their roster to 15 players by waiving veteran center Dwight Powell, the team announced (Twitter link). ESPN’s Shams Charania was first to report the move (Twitter link).

Powell was the longest-tenured member of the organization, spending the last 12 years in Dallas after being acquired in a 2014 trade. He re-signed with the Mavs shortly before the start of training camp on an Exhibit 10 contract that included a $1MM guarantee. That figure would have risen to $1.5MM if he had made the opening night roster.

“Dwight was the consummate professional throughout his 12 seasons with the Mavericks and embodies everything you want in someone representing your organization,” president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri said in a press release. “He’s a tireless worker, an incredible teammate and someone whose impact extends well beyond the basketball court and into the Dallas community. We are grateful for everything Dwight has contributed to this franchise. He will always be part of the Mavericks family, and Dallas will always be a home for him. We wish him nothing but the best in this next chapter.”

Mavericks Finally Make Correct Decision on Veteran Dwight Powell

The Dallas Mavericks re-signed veteran big man Dwight Powell ahead of the 2026 preseason, despite it taking them to 16 players on standard contracts.

Reports indicated that he had been re-signed with the promise that they would make an effort to clear a roster spot for him so that he could be on the team.

The Mavericks' efforts to do so came back empty, so they decided to waive Powell, according to ESPN's NBA insider, Shams Charania.

New Mavericks head coach Dusty May has been extremely complimentary of Powell throughout the preseason, and they really valued his voice in the locker room.
