Despite a $500 million net worth, Shaq's on his 5th college degree—and says he's always learning

It’s rare these days for a star college basketball player to stay in school for more than a year, let alone return to finish a degree after turning pro. But Shaquille O’Neal has made a habit of doing just that.

The 7-foot-1 basketball legend spent three seasons at Louisiana State University before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft. He left without finishing his degree, but made a promise to his mother that he would eventually walk across the commencement stage.

Since then, O’Neal has followed through—and then some. He now has four degrees to his name, including a bachelor’s, an MBA, an Ed.D., and, most recently, a master’s in liberal arts from LSU.

NBA legend Shaq says AI cannot replace real-world experience as he pursues fifth degree

Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal is pursuing a master’s degree in criminology at Sacramento State University, continuing his academic journey decades after entering the NBA. The 54-year-old already holds four degrees and expects to complete his latest programme by fall 2027 or summer 2028, Fortune reported.

O’Neal began the course this summer and is studying in a hybrid format. His current subjects include “Critical Analysis of Law & Justice”, reflecting his longstanding interest in law enforcement and criminal justice.

The former NBA star spent three seasons at Louisiana State University (LSU) before becoming the first overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft. He subsequently returned to complete his education, fulfilling a promise to his mother. His qualifications now include a bachelor’s degree, an MBA, a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and a master’s in liberal arts from LSU.
