Bernie Sanders says Angie Nixon will be Florida's next senator at Tampa rally
TAMPA, Fla. (CBS12) — Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders rallied with Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon in Tampa on Saturday, backing her campaign against Republican Sen. Ashley Moody.
Nixon, a former Florida state representative, said she is running for the U.S. Senate because she believes working people are struggling while politicians grow wealthier.
Nixon introduced Sanders as her former boss and “one of the hardest working men in the US Senate.”
Sanders praised Nixon's victory in the Democratic primary, pointing to the campaign's grassroots support despite a significant fundraising disadvantage and a lack of establishment backing.
“There was a candidate in the Democratic primary who was outspent 15 to 1,” Sanders said. “There was a candidate who had no establishment support. There was a candidate who created an extraordinary grassroots movement of working-class people. And that candidate is Angie Nixon.”
