Warren Buffett Told His Wife’s Trustee to Buy 1 Vanguard Fund. Here’s What $300 a Month in It Becomes

Buffett directed his wife's trustee to put 90% of her inheritance into a low-cost S&P 500 index fund, specifically recommending Vanguard.

Investing $300 a month for 30 years at 9.5% annual returns grows to roughly $610,000, with $502,000 coming from compounding alone.

A 1% annual fee shrinks that same $610,000 outcome to $495,000, costing more than your total contributions over 30 years.

When an adviser gives strangers bad advice, the adviser pays nothing for it. When a man leaves instructions for his own family's money, he lives with the results. Because of this contrast, one section in Warren Buffett's 2013 shareholder letter carries more weight than any fund commercial ever made.

Warren Buffett's classic advice to 99% of investors is still paying off

Warren Buffett says almost nobody can do what he does, so they shouldn't even try. His advice continues to pay off.

The legendary investor has proclaimed for decades that 99% of people shouldn't try to pick winning stocks, dabble in options, time the market, or hire a money manager.

"My regular recommendation has been a low-cost S&P 500 index fund," the retired Berkshire Hathaway chairman and CEO wrote in his 2017 letter to shareholders.

The benchmark index, which tracks the performance of 500 of the largest publicly traded companies in the US, climbed to a record 7,819 points on Tuesday.

It has gained 14% this year, almost 80% over the past five years, and nearly 1,100% since it slumped below 700 points during the financial crisis.

AI Bubble or Not, Warren Buffett Would Buy This Vanguard Index Fund

After a brutal 2022, the S&P 500 (^GSPC -0.04%) surged 24% in 2023, 23% in 2024, and roughly 16% in 2025. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC -0.29%) performed even better, gaining 43%, 29%, and 20%, respectively. Both indexes have climbed in 2026, extending a rally fueled mostly by enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence (AI).

There's a catch to all of this. A good portion of the market's appreciation is concentrated in a relatively small group of technology companies. This raises an uncomfortable question: Are investors witnessing a sustainable technological revolution or is another stock market bubble brewing?

Thankfully, Warren Buffett spent his career explaining how everyday investors can navigate situations exactly like this.
