Marcel Hug ‘shatters’ Bank of America Chicago Marathon course record: Unofficial results

Marcel Hug and his silver helmet have once again crossed the Chicago Marathon finish line in record fashion, continuing his dominance not only in the city but in marathon racing.

Known as the "silver bullet," Hug, who is widely considered the most dominant wheelchair marathoner of all time, defended his title, winning the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon for a seventh time. His finish set an unofficial course record Sunday, which was previously set at 1:22:37.

"Today was maybe one of the best performances of my career. … Really, really happy. I mean, also the crowd out there. Without them, I could not make it," Hug said at the finish line.

Manuela Schär, one of the greatest women’s wheelchair racers of all time, will come to Chicago with her eyes on yet another title.

She is a six-time Paralympian with three gold medals, five silver medals and two bronze medals.

Schär is the official women’s wheelchair marathon world record holder with a time of 1:35:42.

Schar won gold at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, where she broke her own record in the 800 meters. In 10 appearances at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, she has had two victories, six runner-up finishes, one third-place finish and one fourth-place finish.

2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Wheelchair Elite Athlete: Marcel Hug

Marcel Hug, who is widely considered the greatest wheelchair marathoner of all time, returns to Chicago hoping to extend his dominance to a seventh Bank of America Chicago Marathon title.

Hug most recently won last year, marking his fourth consecutive victory in the city.

Hug holds the world record for the marathon of 1:17:47 set in Oita, Japan, in 2021.

More Information: Hug set the course record in Chicago in 2022 and lowered it again the following year. He is a 10-time Berlin Marathon champion, a nine-time Boston Marathon champion and won the London Marathon eight times.
