Here is how Detroit Lions beat reporter Dave Birkett views the Week 1 matchup vs the Green Bay Packers
GREEN BAY − The Green Bay Packers get their shot at the defending NFC North champion Detroit Lions on Sept. 7 in what could be the biggest NFL game of the weekend.
Both teams enter the 2025 season with Super Bowl aspirations, but first order of business is to take care of the divisional games.
Dave Birkett, Lions beat writer for the Detroit Free Press, answers questions about the Packers’ opponent:
Birkett: The Lions have new offensive and defensive coordinators, plus eight other new coaches, but there hasn’t been that much change. New defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard was part of Dan Campbell’s initial staff and was long considered a coordinator in waiting, and he’s kept much of Aaron Glenn’s scheme. And new offensive coordinator John Morton was with the Lions in 2022 and helped Ben Johnson put the playbook together. There are subtle changes and how both Sheppard and Morton call the game will be different, but for the players it’s mostly been business as usual.
10 takeaways from Morton, Sheppard & Fipp
Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, offensive coordinator John Morton, and special teams coordinator Dave Fipp spoke to the media Thursday as they do every week during the regular season. Here are my 10 biggest takeaways from those media sessions:
1. The Lions do something a little bit unconventional preparing for the draft in that they give a group of players for coaches to evaluate who are maybe outside their area of expertise. A perfect example is Packers rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden being part of Sheppard's evaluation group this year.
Sheppard heads into Sunday's matchup in Green Bay with a lot of knowledge of what Golden brings to the table for the Packers' offense. He compared him to wide receiver Jameson Williams in terms of his speed and said it's always tough facing a team that can run the football as well as the Packers can with Josh Jacobs and now have a weapon in Golden who can take the top off the defense.

Detroit Lions DC Kelvin Sheppard 'anxious' for play-calling debut vs. Green Bay Packers
Not in games, like he'll do Sunday, Sept. 7, when the Detroit Lions open the season against the Green Bay Packers. But in his own head, where he went through a play-calling exercise at the end of every week the past two seasons, simulating games with his linebackers.
