VIX Fell 11% Friday but Still Ended the Week 9% Higher Ahead of the Fed
The Cboe Volatility Index closed at 15.84 on Friday, down 11.2% from Thursday’s 17.84, as U.S. stocks snapped a four-session losing streak. That looks like a decisive return of calm—until the comparison moves back one week.
Cboe’s official daily history shows the VIX was still 9.0% above its September 4 close of 14.53. Friday unwound the sharpest part of Thursday’s protection bid; it did not erase a week in which investors raised the price of near-term S&P 500 volatility ahead of the Federal Reserve’s September 16 decision.
The session offered genuine relief on both sides of the inflation trade. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said August consumer prices rose 0.4% from July and 3.4% from a year earlier. Core CPI increased 0.3% on the month and 2.4% over 12 months. Those readings were close enough to expectations to avoid a fresh inflation surprise, even though the headline monthly rate accelerated.
