Bruce Springsteen biographer and music critic Dave Marsh dies at 76

Marsh was a renowned music critic known for his influential Springsteen books.

Dave Marsh, a longtime music critic who wrote several influential books about Bruce Springsteen, including the early biography “Born to Run,” has died. He was 76.

Marsh died Friday in Connecticut, his friend Jeffrey St. Clair, a co-editor of the online magazine Counterpunch, told The Associated Press. St. Clair said Marsh had been suffering from a degenerative brain disease for several years. Jim Rotolo, the SiriusXM radio host, announced Marsh’s death on his social media accounts.

Springsteen paid tribute to Marsh in an Instagram post, writing that the loss had left the band “heartbroken.”

Dave Marsh, the influential rock writer from Metro Detroit who penned books about Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Presley and more, died Friday at his home in Connecticut, it was reported. He was 76.

Marsh was one of the creators of SiriusXM's E Street Radio channel, and he was a host of SiriusXM's "Kick Out the Jams" for 19 years. He was also a writer and contributor for Rolling Stone and Creem magazines.

SiriusXM host Jim Rotolo, who hosts "The Wild & The Innocent" on the satellite radio network, confirmed Marsh's death Saturday in a Facebook post.

"Some sad news today, E Street Nation. Bruce Springsteen biographer, SiriusXM host, and my friend Dave Marsh passed away late yesterday at his home in Connecticut," Rotolo wrote.

Bruce Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh dies as tributes pour in

Dave Marsh, an early Bruce Springsteen biographer and dean of music critics, died Friday, Aug. 14 at his home in Connecticut.

Marsh wrote what is considered the first biography of Springsteen, 1979's “Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story,” as well as 1987's “Glory Days: Bruce Springsteen in the 1980s” and 2003's “Bruce Springsteen: Two Hearts: The Definitive Biography, 1972-2003.”

The Detroit native also wrote books on the Who, George Clinton, Sly and the Family Stone and the Beatles and more and wrote and edited for Rolling Stone and Cream. But it's his works on Springsteen that helped define and shape the Boss' public persona and created a legacy that remains and grows to this day.
