Earlier this year, the Star Wars prequel trilogy's most iconic villain took center stage for the first time in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. The animated series explored Maul's rise as a deadly crime lord, even as he came into conflict with his successor as Palpatine's Sith apprentice. It was swiftly renewed for a second season, and we now know when Maul will menace the galaxy once more.
The series was the latest in what is becoming an expanding galaxy of animated projects at Lucasfilm. "Get Ready": Producer Reveals Release Window for Second Season of "Star Wars: Darth Maul – Lord of Darkness"
Executive producer and writer of the animated series "Star Wars: Darth Maul – Lord of Darkness," Matt Michnovetz, announced at the D23 festival that the second season will be released in 2027. He did not share other details but advised viewers to "get ready."
Lucasfilm ordered the continuation even before the first episodes were released, as they were confident in the project's success in advance. Earlier, Sam Witwer, who voices Maul, said that production on the second season began "some time ago," so viewers won't have to wait too long for the character's return.
The first season of "Lord of Darkness" was released in April 2026 and received 98% positive reviews from critics and 93% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes. The action takes place after the end of the Clone Wars and Order 66. Maul tries to rebuild a criminal syndicate on the planet Janix, which has not yet been touched by the Empire's power. There, the former Sith meets Padawan Devon Izaru, disillusioned with the Order, and decides to make her his apprentice.
