A trio of Virginia teenagers recently showed up to golf team tryouts, jumped into a nearby lake to rescue three people – including a preschooler who couldn’t swim – after their kayaks capsized, and then earned spots on the squad, according to officials who are hailing their actions as “heroic”.
In events that authorities say demonstrate the kind of leadership that young people are capable of, Andrew Tuggle, 15, and 17-year-olds Gavin Cain and Jackson Castro showed up to the Culpeper Country Club links on the afternoon of 27 July to compete for places on Eastern View high school’s golf team, the local police department said in a statement.
Teen Golfers Save Family After Kayak Capsizes
Three teens trying out for their high school golf team ended up saving a family of three from a lake, reports WUSA. Eastern View High School students Andrew Tuggle, 15, Gavin Cain, 17, and Jackson Castro, 17, were near the second hole at the Country Club of Culpeper when they heard screams from Lake Culpeper, per the Culpeper Times. They then saw two adults and a 3-year-old struggling in deep water near a flipped kayak.
The teens dropped their clubs, scrambled down an embankment, and swam about 50 yards, first reaching the child, the only one in a life vest. They pulled all three to shore before first responders arrived. "The guy actually came up to me and said, 'You saved my life,'" Tuggle recounted. Culpeper Police Chief Christopher Settle praised the "courageous act," as did the school's golf coach: All three made the team.
